SNMP is the communication protocol between management process (NMS) and Agent. SNMP is the predecessor of simple gateway monitoring protocol (SGMP), which is used to manage communication lines. It provides a standardized management framework for monitoring and managing devices in a network environment, a common language for communication, and corresponding security and access control mechanisms. Network administrator can query device information, modify device parameter value, monitor device status, automatically discover network fault, generate report, etc.
